Matthieu Barret - Domaine du Coulet 

Een van de meest intrigerende wijnmakers die in ontmoet heb. De goedlachse Matthieu is net geen 1,70 is redelijk rond en heeft een lekkere baard staan (het kleine beertje, Petit Ours). Zijn grootvader bezit meer dan 11 ha steile terraswijngaarden in Cornas (op een totaal van 120 ha). Hij besluit de druiven niet te verkopen maar zijn eigen wijnen (23 jarige leeftijd in 1998) te gaan maken. Hij volgt niet het pad van de 'klassieke' producenten maar probeert zo minimaal als mogelijk de wijn te beïnvloeden en schroeft het gebruik van eikenhout terug tot een minimum. De nieuwe kelder in 2018 gerealiseerd staat vol met betonnen cuvées. Zijn wijnen zijn intrigerend en zeer puur, met diepgang en zijn stylistisch. Naast de serie Cornas wijnen is er zijn négoce range met wijnen als Petit Ours, Black Flack, No Wine's Land.

Still not yet in bottle, the 2013 Cornas Billes Noires is rock star Cornas that does everything right. Coming from more south and east facing parcel in the northern part of the appellation, it saw 100% whole clusters during fermentation followed by 13 months in Burgundy barrels and demi-muids, then a full year in concrete tanks. Loaded with old school notes of cassis, charcuterie, gamey meats, dark fruit and wild herbs, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a full, layered mid-palate and a beautiful, elegant, seamless texture. It should drink reasonably well on release, but will be better with short term cellaring and drink well through 2028. 92-94/100 Jeb Dunnuck

Run by Matthieu Barret since 1997, this Cornas estate fashions a wild, old school and gamey style of Cornas that will be loved by traditionalist (or anyone who loves great wine for that matter). The estate covers 16 hectares in Cornas, with 80% of the parcels located in the northern part of the appellation and east-facing. The winemaking is about as traditional as it gets with little to no destemming, native yeast fermentations, and aging all in old barrels, foudre and tanks. In most vintages he makes up to three (sometimes four) Cornas: the entry level Brise Cailloux, the les Terrasses du Serre, and the flagship Billes Noires. In addition, in top vintages he’ll release a “Gore” bottling that’s bottled only in magnums. These wines lean towards the fresher, acid-driven end of the spectrum, yet always have terrific fruit, solid concentration and notable purity. Count me a fan.
