David & Nadia
One Paardeberg sustainably farmed vineyard planted in the early 2 000’s is responsible for the core of this wine, blended with a similarly aged organically certified vineyard planted in deep rich clay driven soils, north of Malmesbury. Grenache as our ultimate red variety shows once again why this variety is well suited to the Swartland in its droughts and harsh conditions. Working only with the old “mass” production clone for our Grenache as well as all young plantings as of 2016, it proves that a stronger grower is able to withstand the extreme conditions and heat waves we have been experiencing the past four vintages. In a dry land farmed, poor soil context, “mass- production” clones grafted on moderate strength rootstocks suited to the site and conditions, works well as contradiction to restrict and restrain mass production and thus dilution.
4 weeks on the skins pre-/during fermentation, 60% whole bunch, one punch down/pigeage per day, minimum and gentle extraction. Pressed off and matured in old 500L neutral French oak barrels for a year.
Review
David & Nadia Grenache 2018. Swartland (13%)
Ageing the wine in older wooden barrels really emphasises the fruit purity of this 80/20 blend of grapes from the Paardeberg and Malmesbury. With 60% whole bunches providing some extra spice and structure, this is a scented, red cherry and raspberry fruity Grenache with savoury tannins. 2020-26 Tim Atkin 93/100.
