Enric Soler
De wijngaarden van Enric Soler zijn in de Spaanse burgeroorlog een vliegveld, maar inmiddels ligt de wijngaard er strak bij. Enric is in de jaren negentig de beste sommelier van Spanje geweest en inmiddels doceert hij ook aan de wijnuniversiteit. De 2,5 hectare heeft hij overgenomen van zijn opa, waar hij nu wijnen maakt met een echte Bourgondische insteek. De grond waar de Xarel.Lo staat aangeplant is arm en het weer vaak koel, juist daardoor werken de stokken hard en dat proef je terug!
Review
2020 was a challenging year, not only because of the pandemic but also because the weather was unusually wet and warm. The 2020 Improvisació is pure Xarel.lo from three plots of vines ranging between 40 and 60 years of age on sandy, limestone-rich soil. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in 1,200- and 2,000-liter oak vats from Stockinger and some concrete eggs. This has 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.27 and 5.2 grams of acidity. It's a gentler, riper and rounder wine, approachable early on and easy to understand. It was a small crop, reduced by mildew. 3,780 bottles were filled in May 2021. 92/100 Luis Gutiérrez
Enric Soler produces some of the best white wines from Cataluña. He's in Penedès but left the appellation of origin some time ago. He works 3.4 hectares of vineyards and produces around 12,000 bottles per year. I tasted his wines from 2018, 2019 and 2020, which gave me a good idea of the character of each vintage. 2018 was rainy and with mildew, and they even got snow, a year of moderate alcohol and good freshness. 2019 was more of a "normal" year with good potential for elegance and depth, and 2020 had frost and mildew that resulted in low yields. Improvisació is the wine that reflects the vintage more faithfully, and Espenyalluchs and Nun are more homogeneous; they cushion more the effect of the year, especially the old vines from Vinya dels Taus. Superb wines. One of the best white-wine-only projects in Spain, with Rafael Palacios.
